According to the Michael O'Leary, if Greece decides to reintroduce drachma and devalue it by 60-70 per cent, it would definitely boost tourism in the country. While the chances of Euro exist by Greece are very less, the idea of reintroducing drachma is supported by several tourism leaders.
One of the major reason for the fall of Greece tourism has been rise of cheap Mediterranean destinations like Turkey, Tunisia and Egypt. Tourists looking to soak the sun at beach are preferring to visit North African destinations as they are light on the pockets.
High Euro has made is quite impossible for Greece to compete with these destinations. While Greece tourism did perform very well this year, one can't ignore that unrest in North Africa played very important role in that.
Reintroduction of drachma would mean that Greece can become more affordable for the tourists and give better competition to Egypt and Tunisia. European tourists who are taking more interest in visiting North Africa would turn towards Greece for spending the vacation.
Things to do and see
Kalymnos, one of the Greek islands that ‘s quite close to Western Turkey, has become rather popular for rock and mountain climbing because of its mountainous landscape. If you’re not enthusiastic about rock climbing then perhaps a trip to the Sea World Museum would be more to your liking. It’s quite a good museum with four rooms exhibiting a variety of items relating to sponge fishing and model ships. Just outside the town of Pothia is a wonderful church set on top of a hill called Agios Savvas. It is shaped like a cross and made from stone in very picturesque surroundings. The ruins of the castle at Horio are interesting to see, and so is the Church of Christ on the sea front. You must go to see the wonderful bronze mermaid statue that welcomes visitors to the shore, it’s quite impressive. There are also the caves of seven virgins to see. They are said to be where seven women folk escaped to after pirates tried to kidnap them. They got lost in the caves never to be seen again. Alongside the caves are the castle ruins of Chrysohera believed to have been built around the 13th century. Amongst the ruins you can still make out the coat of arms for the Genoan noble man Viniali. There are also several chapels inside that were dedicated to Saints. There are some excellent views from the ruins of the castle. Because the land is mountainous, it does give the island a wonderful landscape. There are many photo opportunities while visiting the small fishing villages and walking through the lush environment. It’s very low key here and very traditional, but the local people are very friendly and welcoming.
Eating
Pothia is one of the larger towns, but it is not really over developed for tourism and is authentic and traditional, as are many of the other towns and villages on this island. You will find no pizza hut or Mc Donald’s, but what you will find is traditional cuisine that is very tasty, like goat and lamb dishes and many sea food delicacies like squid or octopus. There is fast food Greek style, like delicious filled pancakes and many pastries and, of course, fries are always available.
Beaches
There are around a dozen beaches on this island so you will be spoilt for choice, there are the peaceful ones off the beaten track, hidden in wonderful coves, and then there are the ones that attract a lot of tourists because they have more facilities close to the beach, like Myrties beach. It is approximately 8 km west of Pothia and has a fine pebbled beach; unfortunately no golden sands but it is still an idyllic place to top up your tan or play with your children. The beaches around the island vary from large pebbled, small pebbled, sandy and pebbly to golden soft sands. Some of them may be a little rough under foot, but what they don’t lack is scenery and marvellous views, with rocky and mountainous backdrops and lush greenery from the citrus fruit trees. Don’t expect jet skis and banana boats on the island because you won’t get it, but some of the beaches do offer sea kayaking and snorkelling and small boats to take out to sea. These beaches are more for the sun worshippers looking to relax as the heat soars over 30 degrees in the height of the summer months.
