As efforts to minimize the environmental impact, the U.S. Coast Guard announced on April 28, 2010 that controlled fires would begin to burn off massive oil spill on the surface of the Gulf of Mexico from the April 20 oil rig explosion.

The Deep Horizon oil rig, leased and operated by BP Exploration and Production, suffered an unexplained explosion killing eleven workers.

Shortly after the initial oil rig explosion, the rig sank and began to leak oil at a rate of 1,000 barrels a day. The Coast Guard attempted to stop the leak by first deploying robotic submarines to plug the leak, but failed to activate the shut-off valve to stop the leak. The oil leak has since become much worse and has now increased to a rate of nearly 5,000 barrels a day.
