The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, one of the largest lineage societies in the world, has built some of the most impressive buildings in the nation’s capitol. Their three major facilities, the DAR Library, the DAR Museum, and Constitution Hall, lie just a short distance from the White House. All are open to the public.

The DAR Library: a Resource for Genealogy and History

The DAR Library, at 1776 D Street NW, was founded in 1896 to aid the staff genealogists who needed genealogical and historical publications in order to verify applications for the society. The collection has been open to the public since about 1900, although non-members of the society (or related societies, such as the Sons of the American Revolution and the Children of the American Revolution) must pay a small fee to access the collections.

American History at the Library

The Library contains more than 150,000 volumes, and continues to grow by about 5,000 titles per year. Many of these volumes are not available elsewhere. In addition, many chapters have compiled local records, and these have been added to the collection, which now covers all periods of American history.
