Just 20 minutes from downtown Houston, in La Porte Texas, is a national historic landmark that should be on every Texan's must see list. This humble battleground marks the birth of the Republic of Texas, won through native Texian's blood.

In March of 1836 the war for Texas independence was being waged against Mexico, and General Sam Houston and his Texian troops were very much the underdogs. The Mexican army greatly outnumbered them and they were forced to retreat to the south bank of Buffalo Bayou near Lynch's Ferry. Cries of "Remember the Alamo," could be heard on the battlefield that fateful day in April when the armies finally met, and the Texians prevailed. Their story unfolds at this historic site.

On April 21, 1836 the Mexican rule of the area called Texas came to a dramatic end. The historic battle of San Jacinto had a long reaching effect on Texas and the United States, eventually moving America's border from Texas to the Pacific Ocean.
