Eco or Adventure tourism in British Columbia ranges from rustic wilderness travel to catered tours based in high-end resorts. The Discovery islands, lying between B.C.'s mainland and central Vancouver Island, offer high-end resorts and cozy cabins with all the amenities to make your holiday comfortable as well as adventurous.

Getting to the Discovery Islands

If you are travelling by road from Vancouver, on the mainland of B.C., catch the ferry from either Horseshoe Bay, north of Vancouver, or from Tswwassen, a short drive from the U.S. border. www.bcferries.com includes details about fares, routes and schedules. Driving either the fast inland highway, or the scenic coastal route, you will feel your stresses fading away.

If you arrive in Vancouver by air, transfers are available to one of the smaller airlines that fly into Campbell River, the city that is connected by ferry to Quadra Island. The Island Link Express is a comfortable and reasonable option from the airport in Vancouver or the Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo. This service will drop you off at the Quadra Island ferry in Campbell River. During the summer months, seaplanes commute between Seattle, Victoria, and Vancouver directly to remote lodges and resorts on the islands. www.bcadventure.com

Quadra and Cortes are the only islands in the Discovery group that are accessible by car ferry. The outer islands include Read, the Rendezvous Islands, Maurelle, Stuart, Sonora, Redonda Islands, and West Thurlow. These outer islands are easily accessible by sea plane, local charter boats, and water taxis. Local resorts and remote lodges often provide water taxi service.
