By 1900 American-style football had become a popular pastime, particularly on the collegiate level. Capitalizing on its new status, a group of California promoters decided to feature a postseason football game as part of an annual festival known as The Tournament of Roses. Little did they know that they were creating a new tradition.
The Tournament of Roses
The first Tournament of Roses was staged in 1890 by the Pasadena Valley Hunt Club as a means to promote the virtues of California life. During the first few years the festival grew to include marching bands, floats, and athletic events such as tug-of-war, polo, foot races, ostrich races, and bronco busting.
In 1895 the Tournament of Roses Association was formed and seven years later decided to feature a football game as one of the tournament’s secondary events. Billed as the “Tournament East-West Football Game,” the Association chose as one of the game’s contestants the powerful 10-0 Michigan team. For the Wolverines’ opponent, they selected the 3-1-2 Stanford team.
