Contrary to popular belief, the area most tourists would refer to as Cancun is not actually the city itself. The area more commonly thought of as Cancun is actually known locally as the Zona Hotelera (or Hotel Zone). This is the area where the majority of the hotels and nightclubs are found and is the heart of tourist activities in the immediate area.

The Hotel Zone consists mostly of one long thin stretch of land that runs parallel to the main land separated by the Nichupte Lagoon. There is one main road that runs the length of the strip named Avenida Kukulcan (Kukulcan Boulevard). At the northern end of the strip, the road turns sharply to the west where it rejoins the main land and leads in to the city of Cancun. It is at this turn where most of the major bars and night clubs are found such as Coco Bongo, Dady O and The City. For anyone wanting to venture in to the main city, this is also simple to do, but it’s best to bring a map since the mix of one way streets and frequent turns can be difficult to navigate for anyone that has not been there before.
