Zion National Park Tours

Walking and wading through the eerily beautiful Zion slot canyon makes for one of the world’s best adventures. Hikers, however, must be equipped to carefully navigate the slippery underwater rocks of the cold and swift-flowing Virgin River. There are various options for enjoying all or part of this impressive 16-mile gorge in Zion National Park.

Options for Hiking the Zion Narrows

Hikers willing to endure the physical and mental challenges required to complete the entire river hike will be rewarded by incomparable beauty in an authentic wilderness setting. Hikers who desire a less harrowing and less strenuous experience can hike as little as a few feet or as much as five miles into the canyon from the bottom. There are three options for hiking the impressive Zion gorge.

Full day hike – Hiking the entire 16 watery miles in one day, beginning from Chamberlain’s Ranch. This strenuous option requires a backcountry permit and proper equipment as well as sound judgment and a shuttle to the trail head. Hiking time ranges from 7 to 13 hours.

Two-day backpacker’s hike – Covering the entire hike in two days includes an overnight stay in one of the canyon’s primitive campsites located between mile 8.5 and mile 11.

Round-trip hike from the bottom – Beginning at Temple of Sinawava in Zion Canyon, hikers can travel to Big Springs, near the southern-most campsite. Many day hikers travel only about 2 ½ miles in to the junction of Orderville Canyon.

Dangers of Hiking the Zion Narrows
